We had dinner tonight with friends and one of them said something that really made me and Mr M think. They’ve got two kids and the mum is battling a bit at the moment with her daughter who has hit her teenage years. They seem to be arguing a lot, and the daughter thinks her mum doesn’t understand her at all. And by the mum’s own admittance, they are completely different. But while she was telling us about it, she said ‘The thing is, you bring up the child you have, not the one you thought you’d have’. Here’s a family who had children naturally, yet the daughter is nothing like her mum. So even when it’s the mum’s egg and the dad’s sperm, you still have no guarantees that the child will be anything like you in the end. After we left dinner, me and Mr M both said how much this had resonated with us. You never know how your child is going to turn out, so the egg is just one part of the process. This really made us think tonight that egg donation really could be the right thing for us to do.
